The transformation of Italian cities: from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance From Shinya Katayama, Professor, Faculty of Architectural Design, Japan Women's University
The 14th century, at the end of the Middle Ages, can be said to be the age of cities in Italy. It was during this time that city-states sprang up all over the peninsula, and the central cores of the great cities that exist today were formed. Cathedrals and city halls were built as symbols of Italian cities that enjoyed political and economic prosperity, and their interiors were decorated with murals by contemporary artists. Later, when the Renaissance era arrived in the 15th century, pictorial expression using perspective drawing was pursued, which had a major impact on architectural space. In this course, we will focus on painting and architecture, and the urban space that serves as the environmental background for these, and consider how people's perception of space changed from the late Middle Ages to the Renaissance, resulting in the creation of the Renaissance cityscape.
